UPDATE: Atrios suggests that those in attendance at the inauguration turn their backs on Rick Warren. Mahablog has some thoughts worth considering, as does digby. Will also link to Ruth when she gets her post done.
MORE UPDATES: Here's Ruth's post, and don't miss Greenwald's interview with Pam Spaulding. Steve Benen over at Washington Monthly posted Obama's response which, as he notes, sounds nice but is ultimately unpersuasive. Benen, however, says:
I'm reluctant to make too big a deal about this. As I argued this morning, it's a symbolic gesture, which will likely have no substantive effect whatsoever. But that doesn't change the fact that it's a mistake.and I'm inclined to disagree with that. I think it might be substantively damaging indeed. "The Left" as I see it, is tired of being marginalized.

It makes me feel like my own efforts are sullied, that any televangelist is part of the inauguration. Am working on my post on it.
Agreed, Ruth. It's a totally disgusting choice on Obama's part. Very disappointing.
now up, Rick Warren Invokes Hate

A fucking Druid could not have been worse.
Not that there's anything wrong with Druidism...
A druid would have served the community instead of live off of it.
I have to say that I don't really care about this one. Napolitano is a choice I am not happy with, and I'm not sure about a rancher at Interior.
This one just seems like Obama to me. He's pretty damned secure about what he believes; he's told us, and his record supports his claims that he is progressive. He respects Warren in some weird way (maybe because he really believes that people of principle can find common ground). I'm not a Warren fan -- I find evangelists uniformly too loud and poorly pressed. But I am OK with a bunch of people making a committment to this administration, even if they don't agree with each other -- or us -- about everything.
I'm willing to see what this produces.
In other words -- I'm not cheering the choice, but I'm not losing my lunch over it, either.
Also, I think a couple of these comments are unfair to Druids. :)
