I was raised Catholic and recall some very good people being involved in the church. Sadly, this pervasive cloistering, if you will, I see as good intentions (possibly) but ultimately circling the wagons to suppress questioning. And those good intentions cannot survive against the self-perpetuating need to maintain one's own selfish interests. Oh, and being based on fear for the last 2000 years hasn't helped.
