Wanker of the Day

Beating Atrios to the punch, Jamie Kirchick.

If Senate Democrats don't want to kick Joe Lieberman out of the caucus, fine. The citizens of Connecticut will get around to it soon enough. But to leave him in as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is just stupid. We've had 8 long years of Intense Stupid and I'm tired of it.

Kirchik is too easy a target. Hell, he's not even fun to take down. He does all the work himself! Sullivan masterfully points out the wrongess of Kirchik's arguments, but even the newest of political neophytes wouldn't have too much trouble with him. I just can't believe he's still employed. Do they just keep him there as a punching bag?

I guess Obama feels kicking Lieberman in the seat (so to speak) would tarnish his image as a bridge-builder.

Since I have been counting the days until we could boot the man, it is hard for me to by sympathetic on this one. Call Lieberman a social liberal all you want -- supporting McCain meant supporting a conservative social agenda.

It's not just that he "supported" McCain, though, Donna - it's that he himself engaged in some of the most egregious anti-Obama demagoguery of the campaign. I really think that this election was a referendum on not so much conservative policies as much as rightwing tactics, and if Lieberman had used his platform to repudiate those tactics while still speaking out for his friend, that would have been different. Furthermore, by all accounts he has been a disaster as the Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, engaging in no oversight whatsoever while the Bush administration ran rampant with corrupt ineptitude. He definitely deserves to lose that position.
