Imagine this scene. Obama, the newly elected fire chief, comes upon an apartment complex fully ablaze. He sees a group of kids rush out of a side door carrying matches and a can of gasoline. Obama immediataely rushes into the building and starts pulling people out, saving dozens of lives. Then he directs the fire department as they put out the blaze. Then he starts trying to find temporary shelters for the diplaced residents and begins planning the repairs and rehabilitation needed to fix the apartment building back the way it was. And you are mad because Obama didn’t drop everything and chase after the kids with the matches? And no, he can’t do it all at once. If he were to focus his efforts on prosecuting the Bushies, it would create a huge media circus and firestorm and he would never be able to get the country’s focus back on fixing the huge problems that were left behind. Sicing the Justice Department on the Bushies would be like throwing Brer Rabbit into the briar patch. Remember that the Bushies live for power. Right now they have no power. But a federal prosecution fiasco would give them the limelight and bully pulpit they currently lack as well as making them a cause celebre and rallying point for the currently disenfranchised wingnut teabaggers. The best thing that Obama can do to punish the Bushies is to demonstrate once and for all that not only did THEIR ideas fail, but that the Democrats’ idea work and can make the country a better place. That will go a lot further towards discrediting them than putting them behind bars and essentially turning them into martyrs for crazed wingnuts.
Mike, that's an interesting analogy. No one is suggesting that Obama "drop everything" but we are appalled that he would impede the progress of investigations that were underway when he took office, and by claiming, no less, the very same dictatorial powers claimed by the Bush administration to shield its worst abuses from legal review.
And let's not kid ourselves that those "kids with matches" who are still running free and making a total sham of the concept of the rule of law in our country can't continue to set more fires. They can, and indeed they will. And those fires will only get bigger and more destructive the longer they are allowed to operate.
Furthermore, let's remember that we have insisted that leaders of other countries be brought to justice for these very same crimes. What does it say about us that we are unwilling to hold ourselves accountable because to do so would be politically messy?
