The Worst of the Worst

Speaking of bad apples, Digby points us to this post by Scott Horton which tells us that a survey of historians confirms the conclusion that 80% of the rest of country has already reached: that George W. Bush is, indeed, the Worst President Evah. A comment from one of the historians surveyed (my favorite part emphasized):
“No individual president can compare to the second Bush,” wrote one. “Glib, contemptuous, ignorant, incurious, a dupe of anyone who humors his deluded belief in his heroic self, he has bankrupted the country with his disastrous war and his tax breaks for the rich, trampled on the Bill of Rights, appointed foxes in every henhouse, compounded the terrorist threat, turned a blind eye to torture and corruption and a looming ecological disaster, and squandered the rest of the world’s goodwill. In short, no other president’s faults have had so deleterious an effect on not only the country but the world at large.”

I think that quote should be written on each and every bathroom stall in the country.

By W himself.

With a Sharpie.

Duct-taped to his face.

And it ain't over yet. He has plenty of time to really cement his legacy.

(sorry, Ann, for leaving such a scary comment)

That's correct: there's time to fuck it up even more!

Which means I reserve the right to change the receiving orifice for that Sharpie.

No list of Bush's many, many, many shortcomings is complete without Dick.

Donna, tho not referred to specifically by name, I feel certain that Dick is one of those "foxes" appointed to a "henhouse" and most assuredly someone who humored Dubya's "deluded belief in his heroic self." But you know, Dick probably deserves a whole category by himself as the Worst Vice President Evah. What other contenders might there be?

Freewheel, I don't think Bush's legacy could be any more "cemented" (!) but you are right. He has more than enough time to do some more really horrible stuff. Thoughts like that cause me to mutter "God help us!" despite my tepid endorsement of religious faith.

Heydave, your talent for dreaming up really creative and excruciating punishments is quite amazing! Do you suppose you were a high-ranking official of the Inquisition during a previous life? Something to think about!

George W. Bush's presidency is the best thing that ever happened for James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore and Andrew Johnson.

Mike: I'm no historian, but I think W is worse than the lot of them. These are presidents (and you could add Hoover to your list) who have been heavily criticized for not dealing with the nation's problems. These were problems that were brewing, or that they inherited. While these lower-tier presidents may have made the situations worse, they did cause the problems themselves. By contrast, the war in Iraq was caused by W.

The historians are going to have to create a whole new category of badness just for the Bush presidency, because it is really not fair to all of the other bad presidents.
I mean, how can you compete with someone who starts a needless war, bankrupts the country and wrecks the economy all at the same time? And that is all before we even touch on the topics of cronyism, incompetence and corruption.
