Gee, what a stick in the mud he is. I'll bet he's not a lot of fun at parties. Seriously, though, I like James McMurtry. He's a regular at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Have you ever been?
I avoid outdoor music festivals like the plague, but I have many friends who make the KFF every year, without fail. As much as I hate crowds and heat, I did see James M. at one of Cindy Sheehan's protest gatherings in Crawford: A group of us, including son #2, Sandy, piled into a car with our picket signs and ice chest and made the 2+hour trek from Austin. What a hoot! The last outdoor music festival I attended was, I think, 1974 (?) - Willie Nelson's first fourth of July picnic at Dripping Springs, just so you know what an old coot I am!
I worked at the Kerrville Daily Times in the mid-90s and got to attend KFF many times. They have a really nice concert arena with lots of bench seating plus lots of people bring their own lawn chairs. The concerts are in the evenings so it's not like your going to get baked in the sun. I had some friends from Dallas who used to set up camp every year "Villa Vino" and it became a popular hangout for a lot of the folk singers. We would never camp out ourselves since my wife hates camping (although she loves being outdoors).
Hey! Somebody needs to go poke ATC with a stick and see if it is still moving.
