Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame

The Dave Clark Five:

The Ventures:

Because, for the moment, it's better than talking about politics, which is too damn depressing. And yes, I am not including Madonna or John Mellencamp. Because I don't want to.

Well, that was an odd trip down the memory hole: when I was a lad, my parents worried that I was too bookish and tried to get me involved in "sports." That somehow morphed into baton lessons, if you can believe it. I guess that was at least some physical activity for Young Nerds at the time. Anyway, hearing "wipe out" brings back those shudders of adolescent times, best not mentally reviewed while drinking scotch in one's advancing years.

Anyway, I'm much better now, and just regret that my dad never lived long enough to see that I did grow up, find girls, play real sports, and all that shit.

Plus, apropos of Madonna's induction, I also learned to swear in wonder at the incongruity of her various antics.

Damn! Did the Ventures have any other songs? Doesn’t matter. They deserve induction into the Hall of Fame just for that one by itself.
I defended the DC5 last year when the E-N wrote another one of its pissy editorials bemoaning that their favorite punk rock groups were overlooked for bands that actually have musical talent.
But why are you so down on John Mellencamp? I can understand being down on Madonna, but even in her case I would have to argue that she merits induction if for nothing else making it possible for Weird Al to make this parody.

Love that Weird Al parody!
Especially that background announcement: "Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard"

That made my day!

Hi there, heydave! As the mother of two boys whose devotion to sports far outweighs their interest in reading, I can't help but wonder at parents who worry about their children being "too bookish." What I wouldn't give to be able to instill just a LITTLE more "booksishness" in them! Baton lessons, huh? My, my. Yes, I can certainly understand the PTSD flashbacks that "Wipeout" might trigger - sorry 'bout that!

I really don't have anything against Madonna. I've always admired her skills at self-promotion, I just never cared all that much for her music. Ditto for Mellencamp. They both did, maybe one or two songs that I liked okay, but I was just never all that fired up about their body of work as a whole. Well, for that matter, it's not like I was a huge DC-Five or Ventures fan either, but they bear inclusion here as icons of that junior high era of AM pop radio that I occasionally delve into...

Hi Mike! Your comment came in as I was writing this. The Ventures may best be known for the theme song to Hawaii Five-O...

Actually, it was kind of cathartic to see the song being played; I think that vision will replace some of the less desirable ones for me.

I agree with your Mellencamp appraisal. His repertory is pretty hit or miss with me, and certainly out of sync with generic public opinion. But, hey, that describes a lot of my life.
